The big question
If you’ve worked with us you know that time and time again we will come back to the same question with our clients. That's because we think it’s the question that matters most:
WHAT DO YOU WANT?
What you want for your business, for yourself, for your family is not the same as your goals, which may be more specific and finite. What you want is foundational and is the ‘why’ that you come back to as you move through your days. It may be that you want a billion dollars, or to retire at 45 or to create a business to pass to your children...or something else entirely.
It’s not surprising to us that entrepreneurs rarely stop to ask themselves this question. It’s easy to be caught up in the day-to-day doing. What’s fascinating is how many people really struggle with answering this question. People say things like, ‘Well, I don’t need that much,’ or, ‘I can live pretty frugally,’ or they get caught up in what they think they are supposed to want.
To help you answer this all-important question, here are some things to consider.
Throw out everything you believe about what you are SUPPOSED to want.
Get honest about what you believe would make you happy EVEN if it’s not what other people would expect.
Consider what you NEED be it financial, emotional, creative, or relational.
You are ALLOWED to want things.
If you are struggling, start by thinking about what you DON’T want, like, ‘I don’t want to work more than 30 hours a week,’ or ‘I don’t want to manage a team.’
Try imagining yourself at the end of your career looking back. Ask yourself what would have happened in your business/life in order for you to feel really happy with how it went.
Remember that you can CHANGE YOUR MIND anytime you want. In fact, it’s normal to change your goals as you and your business evolve.
Why do we insist on this question several times a year with our clients? Because there is no point in working on anything in your business if you’re not completely clear on what it is you want. And because you and your business are in constant evolution.
If you don’t know what you want, that’s okay. But why not start this year by giving it some thought? We promise, it will be worth your time.
